Milan Fashion Week February 22nd - 28th 2012

Since 1943 when the first Fashion Week was held, fashion weeks – a week where designers and brands display their latest collections for buyers and the media to view, have become completely unmissable events in the fashion calendar. London Fashion Week has just finished, passing the baton on to Milan.

The two collections that I feel have really stood out so far in Milan Fashion Week are Gucci’s sultry collection and Max Mara’s Spring brights Collection. Max Mara’s collection I feel can be summed up as being ‘simplistic’ and ‘bold’. Designer Ian Griffiths managed to fit numerous trends into one show– from chic blazers to cute shorts and from smart collarless coats to a more ‘Sport Luxe’ look of bomber jackets and cycle-shorts, the collection has it all. Camel, white, cream, black and a popping bright blue made the collection feel extremely ready-to-wear for Spring. The hair and make- up of the models mirrored this. Sun-kissed orange cheeks and wet hair braided into dreadlocks gave the collection a ‘spring has sprung’ feel.

Gucci’s collection was a lot more sultry. Gucci’s collection lacked the femininity usually seen in spring collections with a darker colour palate and androgynous pieces dominating the catwalk. The collection featured a great deal of black with small hints of metallic gold and white. Gucci’s spring pieces included sharp blazers, tailored trousers, subtle animal prints and cut-out swimsuits. The make-up really added sex-appeal to the collection with striking smokey eyes and slicked back hair, the quiff also making a return. Gucci creative director Frida Giannini wanted to create a collection which oozed glamour and sophistication and she has done just that!
